Educational Mask Theatre Workshops

Why masks?
- Masks were one of the first forms of artistic expression, dating back to ancient tribal cultures and traditional art history from around the world.

- Masks are sacred tools used by shamans and actors to connect with primal energy, human truths and spiritual wisdom.

- Masks help people who are interested in performing to quickly embrace new characters while feeling less inhibited, enabling them to more easily engage their own dynamic flow of emotions.

Workshops:
1. Mask Family Fun!
For children accompanied by one or two parents, this entertaining, educational two-hour workshop engages imaginations with the playfulness of masks. Become a tiger in the jungle, a bird-of-paradise flying the skies, a beautiful lady by the river or an old man with a story to share. Learn some basic history of world mask culture, have a chance to play with more than 30 handmade paper-mache masks, and delve into a world of colour and joy together with your family!

2. Mask Character Development: Basic Introduction for secondary-school students. This two-hour workshop gives participants hands-on experience, with a colourful array of hand-made masks from All Theatre Arts Association's collection, warm-up games, and the skills of knowing how to first touch and work with a mask. By exploring the five senses of character development and having the chance to play with many unique personalities within the world of mask, this basic intro is fun and inspiring.

3. Find the Soul of the Mask: A week-long master class and performance for drama students and professional actors 18+. Blending a wide range of hand-made, paper-mache masks, students personally experience finding "the soul of the mask". This comprehensive, lively workshop involves morning warm-ups including movement, vocals and character development, with scene development and rehearsals in the afternoon. On the Saturday and Sunday nights, workshop participants offer their solo performances under the direction of Maggie Blue and Hoi Chiu.
